Bullets and broncos. This F-150's ballistic lines and retina-burning orange finish pay homage to the heyday of the Mustang's greener days.
If it walks like a 'Stang and talks like 'Stang, then it must be 'Stang, right? Well, not in this case. If you look past the musclecar orange body streaked by a bold white stripe, aggressive stance, and wide-eyed headlights, and ignore the rumble of its V-8, then you will notice what you are looking at is an F-150 SuperCab 4WD. Built by H&R Springs in Bellingham, Washington, for SEMA 2003, the company's president, Roland Graef, thought the truck would be a great homage to the Ford musclecar era of the '60s and '70s.
Much of the work had to be handled months ahead of time, building castles in the air with pen, paper, and a lot of phone calls. Ford liked the idea of partnering with H&R on the project. There was one hitch - the '04 production F-150 hadn't been released yet, and when it did arrive, H&R would only have five weeks to finish the project before the show. This also meant that no one had any aftermarket parts designed yet for that specific model. So Graef worked with Ford to obtain CAD drawings of the chassis, suspension, and braking systems, allowing H&R and other participating companies to have a product ready for when the truck rolled in from the factory.
Retro styling begins with the paintjob - Bright Matrix Orange applied by Tri-Star Enterprise in Bellingham, split by a white centerline strip and pinstriped with GT F-150 striping. A matching hard tonneau from Gaylord's Truck Bed Lids seals the custom color-matched spray-on bedliner from Permatech. Should extra room be needed, AMP Research's Bed X-tender secures longer loads.
Camtech Precision in Bellingham built a custom front grille with round Hella lighting that harkens back to the classic Mustang, and interestingly, to the front-end styling of the '05 'Stang that in itself borrows from its heritage. The grille is backlit with orange LEDs which also move along the truck's running boards. Complementing the project's burly styling are studded custom HRE 640R 22x9.5-inch wheels in front and 22x11-inchers out back with Graphite centers wrapped in Kumho ECSTA STX tires measuring P325/40R22.
